Honiton Community College Under-14s third at Devon Futsal finals

24 April 2018

Honiton Community College travelled to Paignton to take part in the Devon U14 Futsal finals and the youngsters, who had won the East Devon title to book their county finals berth, did very well to finish the finals as the third placed team.

The year before, the team had again been in the Devon finals but were not able to get out of the group stage.

However, 12 months on, they were clearly much the better for their previous experience as the only game they lost at the finals was to Newton Abbot, who went on to be the runners-up.

Honiton began the group stage with a 3-1 victory over Stoke Damerel with goals from Josh Warren and Ewan Evans as well as an own goal.

A strong QE side were next and Sam Foster fired them ahead and then Warren, who had provided the assist for the Foster goal, made it 2-0, which was the final score.

The third group game was against Newton Abbot, who inflicted a 2-0 defeat.

Honiton coaches Riggs and Taylor made some changes for the final game which was against Tavistock.

This was a contest that the team went into knowing that they had to win and they did just that with Josh Warren being the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick, the second of which was a team goal, summing up the effort levels and cohesion this group have; Warren was eventually set-up by Dom McCreadie-Taylor after a neat passing move.

That left Honiton qualifying as the second placed side in the group and they went into a 3rd and 4th place play-off against Torquay Boys.

Honiton were focused and started the game quickly, learning from the defeat to Newton Abbot.

Warren scored to give Honiton the lead and victory was sealed when McCreadie-Taylor set-up River Leisk to secure the victory and guarantee third spot. Leo Shelton was superb in goal throughout and made a number of superb saves keeping us in some matches.

The Man of the Match award was shared between goal-scoring midfielder Josh Warren and goalkeeper Leo Shelton.

Mr Taylor may need to look at re-mortgaging his house after the services stop en route back to Honiton for ice creams for each of the squad! Well-deserved though and pennies well spent.

Many thanks to Mr Riggs, Mr Holt and Jake Matthews, who have supported the Futsal club and competitions again this year.
