Luis Fonseca appointed Head Coach

Futsal Club Toronto is pleased to announce Luis Fonseca as Head Coach for FCT’s 1st Team and Technical Director for the club. He officially took over in his role after arriving to Toronto on February 26.

On Monday February 27, Futsal Club Toronto President Roy Blanche introduced Coach Fonseca to the club, supporters and Toronto media.

“Futsal Club Toronto is very happy to announce the signing of one of the world’s greatest futsal coaches and to lead and take our program to the next level. His experience and knowledge of the game will elevate the entire club at all capacities”, said Roy Blanche. “Luis Fonseca is tactical genius and his approach and influence will see him implement a more creative and attacking style of futsal. His strong background in the game will not only help in the development of our senior program but as well in the youth ages.”

One of the most highly recognized futsal coaches in Spain, Luis Fonseca’s coaching career has seen him work with top Spanish 1st division clubs and most recently has spent the last five years as Head Coach for Kuwait’s National Futsal Team. Fonseca started his professional career in 1986 with Club Corazonista FS, where he began as Futsal Coordinator for the club but it was in the 1992/93 season where he would sign a two year deal with TDM Coslada FS of the Spanish 1st division (LNFS) and in 1995 Fonseca took over as Head Coach for Spanish futsal giants Club Caja Segovia FS where he would spend two seasons with the club. Fonseca continued working in the top league of Spain all the way up until 2012 when he signed with the Kuwait FA where he helped Kuwait qualify for its first ever Futsal World Cup in Thailand. He would also go on to win two Gulf Cups (2013 & 2015) and finish 4th in the 2014 AFC Futsal Championship in Vietnam.

“I am grateful to FCT, for giving me this opportunity to spend some time enjoying what I love most which is, futsal, among those who share the same passion,” said Luis Fonseca. “I feel eager and excited to start this new venture and to implement my knowledge in futsal. My goal is to support and put in practice all of my experience, to be at the disposition of all members for any guidance needed, and to align myself with this great club. My work will focus on, dynamics, intensity, tactics and above all, formation, while continuously looking for results, it is beautiful to learn, but if we learn with positive results it is a greater result.”

To date, Fonseca has coached for over 20 years professionally in over 1100 matches in Spain and gave the opportunity to debut to a large number of young players in the Spanish League, many of which were selected for the Spanish National Team.

Currently FCT sits in 1st place in The Ontario Premier Futsal League (OPFL) Canada’s top futsal league and on March 18, Luis Fonseca will lead the squad in the 2017 Provincial Futsal Championship and looking for a berth into the Canadian National Championship and furthermore the CONCACAF Futsal Club Championship.
