Girls' Futsal Series coming to Weymouth

by Nigel Dean

The Dorset Girls' Under-10 and Under-8 Futsal Series will land in Weymouth at Redlands Community Sports Hub on Saturday, January 21 and 28.

Futsal is the only indoor version of football recognised by FIFA and the series is part of a development plan supported by Dorset FA being delivered by girls' club Jurassic Coast Girls FC.

The club has also received funded Futsal equipment thanks to the Postcode Lottery Community Scheme which many of the JCG FC teams and coaches will be wearing and using throughout the series.

The club's chairman and coach Nathan Wood said: "Jurassic Coast Girls are keen on using Futsal as a development tool for its players and it is recognised that there are numerous transferable skills from the fast paced, skilful indoor version of football.

"We therefore train indoors during the winter months, which not only gives the girls the opportunity to practice this version of the game but it's also more comfortable for parents and spectators.

"With the Dorset Girls' League agreeing to a winter break in outdoor fixtures during December and January, the support and funding of the County FA and the fantastic support from the Postcode Lottery has enabled us to expand the Futsal on offer this year expanding from two to four events.”

The Under-10 Festival on Saturday, January 21 is the culmination of a series of three under-10 girls' events which began at Ferndown Leisure Centre back in December with a non-competitive round-robin event delivered as an introduction to the format.

The series continues its learning phase with the Jurassic Coast Futsal Cup held at Purbeck Leisure Centre, Wareham, culminating in the competitive Redlands event which will act as the County Qualifier for the Under-10 National Futsal Festival with the winners forwarded to the regional finals and a potential national finals in Birmingham.

The under-8 event also at Redlands CSH on Saturday, January 28 is again an introduction to the game format pitched to all clubs and players in school Years Two and Three.

Wood added: "At this age it is all about getting girls interested, playing the game and having fun.

"In agreement with the County FA development manager, we have opened this event to all affiliated clubs and registered players, irrelevant of whether their parent club has sufficient players to make a full team.

"Many of the clubs that have already expressed their interest are willing to share or mix players and make teams on the day.

Therefore if there are any girls locally that would be interested in playing football or Futsal in current school Years Two to Five, they are encouraged to contact Jurassic Coast Girls FC secretary on 07588828229 or email secretary JCGFC@mail.com.”
