Ross-on-Wye Colts close to an elusive victory

Wednesday, 16 November 2016

On a damp and bleak November morning, the Ross Juniors Colts Under 9s took to the field after a two week break, for a match against the Futsal Kestrels.

Colts started well with a corner before Alfie put William through who finished neatly in to the corner of the net. Colts continued to put on pressure on and following a good cross from Todd, William just failed to connect with the ball. William then had a one on one with the keeper who was just too strong and Charlie had a long range effort that went just wide.

Kestrels were starting to get more in to the match but in the greasy conditions there was confident defending by Callum, some good midfield battles involving the tenacious Todd and Alfie and good saves by the ever reliable Isaac.

A Colts corner led to a great chance for Owen and the ball, which was going in to the top corner, was blocked by one of his teammates. Another Todd pass went through to William who failed to get the vital touch. Following a quick break William put the ball across and Alfie expertly directed the ball in to the bottom corner. The crowd went wild and were hoping for their second victory of the season.

Although Colts had been on top so far, Isaac had made some vital saves. William shot wide then following a good kick from Isaac, Todd stormed through but the ball went wide and following a good run by Alfie the Futsal keeper made a good save, then, following a goalmouth scramble the ball broke loose and Futsal forced the ball off the post and in to the net.

The half time score of Colts 2-1 Kestrels was a fair result based on the number of chances for each team. Everyone knew the next goal would be vital.

Colts were their usual fully committed selves after the break Alfie was tenacious and Todd’s good run led to the chance for William who was just unable to connect with the ball and soon after just struck wide on the break.

A Kestrels break led to Charlie gaining ground on the winger and making a saving tackle but the resultant throw in led to a goalmouth scramble and the ball went in to the Colts’ net.

The Kestrels were now having the better of the play but the Colts were fully committed. Futsal had some long range efforts as did the Colts, with William just being denied following a great ball by Callum and the ball went out for a corner.

It was great entertainment, Isaac made another good save and the ball was taking off William’s toe when he was about to pull the trigger. The play was back and forth, Futsal put an effort wide and one of their free kicks was parried by Isaac and forced in to the Colts net.

The Colts were unsurprisingly very disappointed and they tried to make a final chance but were unable to. Mr H Cronshaw, the referee, who had had a good match blew the whistle, to applause from the crowd. Unfortunately the home crowd were disappointed but encouraged by another committed performance.
