Homela to conduct Futsal course

November 3, 2016

by Raymond Jaravaza

VETERAN coach and administrator Gibson Homela will conduct a FUTSAL (five-aside football) course from November 7-11 at White City Stadium.

Five-aside football is played on a smaller field, mainly indoors. It is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper and unlimited substitutions are permitted.

Five-aside football is played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football due to the surface of the field.

The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity, and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

Homela, a former member of the Zifa high performance technical committee, said the course will be divided into theoretical and practical sessions as well as an examination on the last day.

“The laws of five-aside football are basically the same as those of the 11-aside version, with just a few changes, so we will be taking the participants through the 17 laws of the game, the technique, tactical, physical and mental aspects of the game,” said Homela.

“We will also go through the administration aspects of the game before winding up with examinations on the last day.

“This is the first time a five-aside football course will be held in Bulawayo.”

The course is targeting five-aside football coaches, referees and administrators from schools, tertiary institutions up to clubs.

The Sport Science and Coaching Department at Nust will also be taking participants through the scientific aspect of five-aside football.

Registration is pegged at $100 per participant and is to be done at the Zifa Southern Region offices in Bulawayo.

Southern Region Five Aside League chairman Philani Banda said there has been an overwhelming response, with interested participants coming from as far as Gwanda.

“So far we have over 40 participants that have shown interest in taking part in the course,” said Banda.
