First for Futsal

THE inaugural IW Walking Futsal tournament, hosted by the Island’s very own Arthritico Mad Ryde, was held on Sunday.

Four teams — Arthritico A and B, Caulkhead Strollers and Portsmouth FC — took part in the tournament at the IW College’s futsal arena.

Although no medals or trophies were awarded, Arthritico A came out on top, with Portsmouth second and Arthritico B and Caulkhead Strollers tied in third.

Organiser Tony Harris said: "The three IW walking football clubs each take it in turns to host a tournament and this time it was ours.

"I thought it would be good to try a different variation of the game by combining futsal with walking football,

"All the players enjoyed the event and we will look to repeat this again next year."

Anyone wishing to try the new version of the sport has been invited to attend training sessions with any of the three Island clubs, Arthritico Mad Ryde, Caulkheads and West Wight.

Players should be aged over 50, although younger players with injuries preventing them playing normal football are welcome.
