New leagues to open in MU intramural sports

HUNTINGTON - The second half of the semester means a host of new leagues are about to open in intramural sports.

Wednesday will mark the beginning of play in a fall table tennis league. While registration is closed for that league, registration will remain open in three other sports, flag football, futsal (indoor soccer) and ultimate Frisbee, until Thursday, Oct. 13. Students can register as teams or as "free agents." There will also be a wallyball league later this semester and registration will remain open until Oct. 27.

"The goal of intramural sports is to reach a variety of different students from different areas. Each type of sport has their own type of personality. We hope that if you do one sport, you will try other sports, though there are always people who only want to do one specific sport," Matt Schaefer, coordinator of competitive sports and camps, said. "The biggest sports that we offer are three-on-three basketball, soccer, flag football and futsal. The new sports we are offering this semester are wiffle ball, pool volleyball and ultimate Frisbee. Wiffle ball has been a big hit. Our league has about 20 teams signed up for it. We hope to reach different people across campus."

Students can register for the leagues online at www.imleagues.com/marshall. They can also find more information at www.marshallcampusrec.com/departments/intramurals/.

The Rec Center is hosting a "Big Pink" volleyball tournament the weekend of Oct. 29 and 30. The event is a special fundraiser for the St. Mary's Pink Ribbon Fund. Registration for the event is $5 per person, and each team will consist of four to 10 players. The tournament uses a giant pink ball.

"Big Pink volleyball is probably our biggest event. All of the proceeds will go to breast cancer awareness at St. Mary's hospital. It's a great way to get involved with the community. It is not just open to Marshall University students, staff and faculty, but all of the community," Schaefer said. "We will also have T-shirts for sale: $10 for a regular shirt and $13 for a long-sleeve shirt. We're hoping to get about 30 or so teams this year. You will need to go to the rec office to register for this."

"We are currently planning for next semester," Schaefer said. "We will announce the full schedule in November. Of course, we will have big sports like five-on-five basketball and six-on-six volleyball."

Something new this year will be softball.

"We will use a 16-inch softball, so it's a bit bigger ball that we will put out on our turf fields," Schaefer said. "We will also have badminton, soccer, futsal and table tennis. Later this semester we will be having an extreme dodgeball tournament in November."
