Northern Areas Futsal gives back to the community

07 October 2016

It is a known fact that sport can bring a nation together, whether it is physically participating or simply enjoying the vibe from the side line. in light of the recent university protests and unrest among the youth, there is good news coming from the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth.

An initiative launched in May, which initially started off as a social gathering among a group of friends to enjoy a game of soccer, has quickly gained momentum and has now attracted close to 40 young men, from as young as 9 years old. Over the past few months futsal games have been played at the old tennis courts in Hillside, in the northern areas, however, due to the lack of maintenance by the municipality the facility is so badly broken down from all the wear and tear over the years and is no longer a safe environment to host futsal matches.

“It is great to see all these talented young men gather for the right reasons. There is a great sense of comradely amongst them as they’ve formed bonds that can only be made when participating in team sport. It is unfortunate that we cannot provide them with a safe facility to play, and in turn ensure that they are kept out of danger. We aim to improve these conditions while attracting youngster from right across the northern area” said, Ashwin Jacobs, captain of the NAF team.

Northern Areas Futsal will be hosting a 5-a-side soccer tournament on the 22nd October at St Thomas Secondary School to raise funds for the restoration and maintenance or the tennis court. All members of the public are invited to enter at team at R70 per player, with a maximum of 10 players per team. All proceeds will go towards this venture.

Furthermore, we would like to appeal to the public to assist us with the restoration and maintenance of the old tennis court in an attempt to transform it into a fully equipped futsal court. We would like to request donations of materials such as nets or fencing to act as a boarder for the court, goal posts, synthetic turf (astro turf) to level out the ground and possibly benches for spectators to enjoy the games and show their support. We would highly appreciate any assistance in this regard.

For any donations or interest in entering a futsal team, you can contact Brent Julie at 062 019 4052 or email brentj@discovery.co.za
