Goal.comArgentina lift Futsal World Cup with nailbiting victory over RussiaOct 1, 2016Two goals from Alan Blandi helped give the South Americans their first-ever title in Colombia as they overcame a stern challenge posed by their European opponents
It might not be the 11-a-side game, but after so many final disappointments Argentina's Futsal team finally set the record straight by winning the 2016 World Cup over Russia.
The team coached by Diego Giustozzi prevailed 5-4 in a tense final, with Alan Blandi netting twice to help the Albiceleste towards the title.
Eder Lima had put Russia ahead after 16 minutes but the lead lasted only a handful of seconds before Alamiro Vaporaki restored parity.
The game continued on a knife-edge until Blandi stepped up with two rapid strikes to put the Argentines 4-2 up and on the verge of glory.
Constantino Vaporaki added another late in the second half, but goals from Lima and Lyskov meant the Argentines were left nervously waiting for the full-time whistle before celebrations could begin.
It is the nation's first-ever triumph in the Futsal World Cup in their eighth participation in the tournament.
