Argentina Downs Egypt, Moves to Futsal Semifinals

MEDELLIN, Colombia – The Argentine national Futsal team smashed Egypt 5-0 in Medellin on Sunday, playing an almost perfect quarterfinals match and qualifying for the semifinals.

Diego Giustozzi’s quintet is now waiting to see who wins the Portugal-Azerbaijan quarterfinals matchup in Cali, which will determine their next opponent.

Argentina, one of three teams that have qualified for all Futsal World Cup tourneys, along with Brazil and Spain, historically has moved the farthest through the competition at the 2004 Taiwan tournament, when it finished fourth.

The Argentine squad dominated Sunday’s match from the start, while Egypt – admittedly lacking Abdelrahman Elashwal on its attacking front – could do little to stem the wave of tallies.

Scoring the goals in the matchup were Pablo Taborda and Damian Stazzone in the first half, and Santiago Basile, Leandro Cuzzolino and Gerardo Battistoni in the second.

The match was played in the Ivan de Bedout Coliseum in Medellin before 2,414 spectators.

The 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup tourney, the eighth edition of the tournament, opened in several Colombian cities on Sept. 10 and will run until Oct. 1.
