Russia crushes Vietnam 7-0, will face Spain or Kazakhstan next in Futsal WC

MEDELLIN – Russia crushed Vietnam 7-0 in the round of 16 at the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Medellin, setting up a clash in the quarterfinals against the winner of the Spain-Kazakhstan match that will be played on Wednesday.

Coach Sergey Skorovich's squad, which was undefeated in group play, rolled to victory at the Coliseo Ivan de Bedut, prompting some observers to pick Russia to win it all.

Russia's power game was too much for Vietnam, which made its FIFA Futsal World Cup in Colombia.

Russia, led by Sergei Abramovich, forced Vietnam's goalkeeper, Dinh Thuan Ngo, to take some chances in an effort to stop the onslaught, but the gamble did not pay off.

In the quarterfinals, Russia will take on Spain, which defeated them in the UEFA Futsal EURO 2016 final earlier this year - or Kazakhstan.

Spain finished group play on Sunday in Group F with no losses and nine points, making it one of the favorites to win the championship.

Spain will play Kazakhstan on Wednesday evening in Medellin in what will be a rematch of the 2016 Eurocup.

Kazakhstan blew out the Solomon Islands 10-0 in Group E action at Medellin's Coliseo Ivan de Bedout to advance to the round of 16.
