FIFA FUTSAL WORLD CUP: COLOMBIA 3-3 UZBEKISTAN

Sep 14 2016

Cali: Uzbekistan were left still seeking a win in their FIFA Futsal World Cup 2016 campaign after drawing 3-3 with hosts Colombia on Tuesday (local time).

The Uzbeks showed right from the off that they were a much improved side from the one that was beaten by Panama and there was no chance of one-sided encounter.

Even so, Colombia looked the more likely to find the first opening, only for a horrible mistake from Carlos Nanez, seeing the ball slip through his fingers for a tap-in, to knock them back.

Colombia regrouped, refreshed and tried again, coming up against the geometrically resilient and organised Uzbek defence. But again, as they looked most likely to score, the sucker punch hit them – this time on the counter-attack.

Jorge Abril gave the home side life just before the break, but Elibaev knocked their hopes back again. But the pressure began to build and build towards the final few minutes.

Uzbekistan, who now sit bottom of the four-team Group A, still have hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages when they face Portugal in their final Group Stage clash on Friday (local time).

Uzbekistan scorers:
Javlon Anorov (4’39”)
Dilshod Irsaliev (14’25”)
Nodir Elibaev (27’43”)

FIFA FUTSAL WORLD CUP: THAILAND 8-5 CUBA

Sep 14 2016

Medellin: Thailand came from behind to defeat Cuba with a remarkable 8-5 scoreline and secure a much-needed three points at the FIFA Futsal World Cup on Tuesday (local time).
It took five minutes for the first goal to get the scoreboard ticking over, but after that the match became a frenetic and chaotic affair, albeit a hugely entertaining one.

Both teams lost their opening matches, so the level of desperation in Medellin’s Coliseo Ivan de Bedout was clear from the outset.

Cuba’s Sandy Dominguez scored the opening for Cuba who raced to a 4-2 lead, only for Thailand to crucially pull a goal back through Suphawut Thuenklang on the stroke of half-time.

Thailand built upon that momentum, but it was until midway through the third quarter that the Southeast Asians finally claimed the lead as captain Kritsada Wongkaeo netted to make it 6-5.

Thuenklang was arguably the star man for Thailand, and he completed a treble late on, highlighted by a spectacular long-range effort.

The win leaves Thailand in sight of repeating qualification to the Round of 16, which they did as hosts four years ago.

The Thais will complete their Group B commitments with a match against Egypt.

Thailand scorers:
Wiwat Thaijaroen (13’23”)
Jirawat Sornwichian (14’24”, 23’39”)
Suphawut Thuenklang (19’58” 2PG, 32’25”, 39’32”)
Jetsada Chudech (25’17”)
Kritsada Wongkaeo (27’03”)
