ECCL tourney underway

THE Ethnic & Cultural Championship League (ECCL) of the University of the South Pacific Solomon Islands (USPSI) Campus in Honiara is currently underway as competitions commences yesterday at the Multi-purpose hall.

The organized competition is an annual event and marked as an important episode in the Centre’s (USP SI) calendar with the focus to unite students of diverse ethnic background to interact with each other and at the same time give room for them to cooperate in sporting activities.

Also it’s an opportunity for students to intermingle with each other, have fun, relax and relief stresses from schoolwork/studies.

USP SI Sport Chair, Leonard Tuasulia said it is a weeklong competition.

“The game matches starts yesterday and will end with finals on Friday 2nd September,” he said.

He said, games featured are Futsal for boys and volleyball for both boys and girls.

“In futsal, we have 32 teams while volleyball games we have 22 teams for boys and 19 teams for girls.”

Mr Tuasulia said futsal games are played in the Multi-purpose hall while volleyball matches are played at the outside courts next to the Multi-purpose hall.

He said the start of competition yesterday is overwhelming as students come out in numbers to support their respective teams.

A student said, such planned event like this is awesome since it enable students to relax and relief stresses that laden them over the past weeks of schooling.

“I believe this is a good initiative to give us students the opportunity to cooperate with each other and also a chance for us to relax our brains while undertaking our studies,” the student commented.

The prize awards for the games are as follows;

Futsal

1st Prize $1000, 2nd prize $800, 3rd prize $500 and 4th prize $300.

The prize awards for both boys and girls volleyball are the same as below;

Volleyball (both boys and girls)

1st prize $700, 2nd prize $500, 3rd prize $300 and 4th prize $150.

Consolation prizes will be also given out at the close of games.

The ECCL competition will end on Friday 2nd September, 2016.
