Sixteen teams for Merdeka futsal tourney

BINTULU: Sixteen teams participated in the Futsal Merdeka Men’s Open tournament 2016 at Pakat Global Sport Centre over the weekend.

Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, who declared open the event, highlighted the valuable role of sports in promoting and friendship among the multi-racial population.

Bintulu 1Malaysia Community chairman Steven Wong Siu Ming reiterated on the same theme.

“The players are from various races, we have Malay, Iban and Chinese and this is a platform and opportunity for us to get together and not only it is good for our health but at the same time we can enhance the team spirit, friendship and cooperation,” he said.

The Bintulu 1Malaysia Community, which organised the tournament and was established in 2012 under the supervision of Bintulu Information Department, is a multi-racial organisation aiming to promote the values of national unity.

“By getting yourselves involved in community related activities, you can further enhance your network and share ideas with others in line with the 1Malaysia concept,” Wong told the players.

The top four teams received RM1000, RM700, RM400 and RM150 cash prizes.

The tournament was held in conjunction with the National Day 2016 celebrations.

Also present at the opening were Miri-Bintulu Information officer Aba Sam, Bintulu District officer Tuah Suni and Bintulu Information officer Pauline Sating.
