ussoccer.comUSA falls to Canada in CONCACAF Futsal Championship second leg QualifierThe U.S. Futsal National Team lost to Canada 5-3 at BN Arena on Thursday night. Following Wednesday’s 4-4 draw, the U.S. gave way to Canada for the final spot in the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.
Robert Renaud put Canada ahead in the 15th minute, but U.S. defender Adriano Dos Santos tied the match one minute later. The U.S. came inches away from a lead in the 17th minute when defender Patrick Healy’s back-heel attempt was denied by the post. One minute later, Renaud responded with his second goal of the night for Canada.
The action continued in the second half when Canada’s Nazim Belguendouz and Ian Bennett scored in the 22nd and 25th minutes, and Renaud completed a hat trick in the 29th to put Canada up 5-1 with 10 minutes left to play.
Despite the deficit, the U.S. did not back down. FNT goalkeeper and captain Danny Waltman came out of the goal as a fifth attacker in 34th minute of play, interchanging with defender Brian Harris, who netted an impressive shot in the 38th minute. Midfielder Daniel Mattos also scored in the last minute of the match with an assist from Tony Donatelli.
The Legacy of TozerOnce captain of the ’86 U.S. FNT, head coach Keith Tozer has dedicated a 20-year coaching career to the U.S. National Futsal program. Tozer led the U.S. to the first-ever title in the history of the CONCACAF tournament in 1996 and helped the team earn the title again in 2004.
In addition to Tozer, the FNT is led by a passionate and visionary trio dedicated to the growth of futsal in the United States that also includes assistant coach Vava Marques and goalkeeper coach Mark Litton, who have been with the team for 18 and eight years, respectively.
