Futsal league hits Wellington

The top four sides in the NZF Futsal National League are all looking to consolidate their places at the top of the table in Series Two, which kicks off at the ‘Home of Futsal’ – ASB Sports Centre in Wellington on Friday.

Capital, South, Auckland and Central-Manawatu have all opened up handy leads over the remaining four teams following Series One in Napier, putting themselves in contention for the four semi-final places that will be on offer in Auckland in December.

Unbeaten Capital return to their home court in excellent form after winning all five games in Series One, while South and Auckland start the weekend hot on the heels of this weekend’s hosts, following four wins from five in Napier.

Fourth-placed Central-Manawatu, led by Adam Cowan and Vanuatu goal machine Seule Soromon, also have momentum as they head south on Friday, having shown in Series One a huge improvement on their wooden spoon finish in 2014.

Manawatu have the added bonus of welcoming back Josh Margetts, who missed the opening games while playing with fellow Futsal White Brayden Lissington for Mountain Magic in the NSW Premier Futsal League.

Lissington too, will resume his duties this weekend with WaiBOP, while a third Futsal White, 2013 NZF Futsal Player of the Year Daniel Burns returns from across the Tasman after a winter in Sydney with the highly rated Dural Warriors, who play in Australia’s F-League.

The influential Burns’ arrival will be a welcome sight for 2014 champions Mainland, who currently sit in fifth spot, six points adrift of Manawatu.

Series Two opens with the always entertaining southern derby between South and Mainland at 12pm, while Saturday night’s Capital v Auckland clash is shaping as another classic, especially following Capital’s 2-1 win in the corresponding Series One clash last month.
