Middlesbrough's finals dream ends with 2-9 defeat to BirminghamMiddlesbrough Futsal Club’s hopes of a place in the Grand Finals were ended on Sunday by a very good Birmingham side. The visitors took the spoils in a 9-2 win at the big opening weekend of Middlesbrough Sports Village and will play the semi finals in June at Middlesbrough's expense.
Martin Sowerby and Adam Byron were on the scoresheet for Boro in front of 140 spectators but Birmingham were dominant, with several players hailing from Spain with professional experience, and deserved the win.
Hodgson’s boys had a small chance of a place in the final four going into today’s match, but he admits he was beaten by a better team.
“Birmingham are a very good futsal team, probably the second best in the country and considering the average age of the Boro squad, we will use this year’s experience to improve for next season,” said the Boro manager.
"Congratulations to Birmingham," he added, "we will see you in next season's Super League!"
Middlesbrough host Genesis next Sunday hoping to consolidate 3rd place in the Super League, which would signify a good season for Boro and a good foundation for the new format league next year. Last week, Middlesbrough Futsal Club were confirmed as one of the 16 teams in the FA National Futsal Super League and given a two year licence by The FA based on the club’s structure, future plans and off the court work.
