The World Futsal Cup ended in spectacular fashion with 4 finals displaying the highest level of futsal. FC Barcelona would have taken the full sweep of winners’ medals but they were prevented from doing so due to an outstanding performance by Rivas ’95 from Madrid in the Alevin division.Over three days teams from all over the world had competed against each other to leave two finalists in each of the four age categories. The participants had travelled from England, Spain, Italy, Portugal, USA and France to the city of Barcelona to test themselves against a diverse selection of opponents in this international event.
In the Alevin, Infantil and Cadete categories the finals would see FC Barcelona play Rivas ’95, both from Spain. In the Infantil and Cadete finals FC Barcelona took early leads and quickly extended their advantage to take home each respective title.
In the Alevin final a large crowd witnessed an incredible game in which either team could have won. FC Barcelona scored early but Rivas ’95 came back before going ahead themselves. Barca found the equaliser but Rivas ’95 restored their lead a few minutes later and protected this lead until the final whistle. Clinical finishing and excellent team defending earned the Madrid side the championship title.
It was two historic clubs that faced each other in the showpiece game, the Juvenil final, with FC Barcelona meeting Benfica. Barcelona started strongly and gained a two goal advantage with Benfica reducing the defecit to one goal before half-time.
In the second half Barca immediately restored their 2 goal cushion from a set play, which had been their strongest weapon throughout the competition. Benfica again reduced the difference to 1 but Barcelona responded and this time they were determined not to let the Eagles back into the game. The Portuguese side opted to use the fly goalkeeper to get back into the game but it backfired and Barca added two more to become champions with a 6-2 victory to close the tournament.
The game was followed by a presentation of all the trophies including a Best Goalkeeper, MVP and Fairplay Award for each category as well as the Runners Up and Winner trophies. Whether they won medals, cups and awards or not all the players and teams gained a huge amount from the tournament that they will take with them into the future.
The feedback from the event was very positive. Alongside the tournament many of the teams took advantage of the location by going on organised tours of the local attractions including the world famous Camp Nou and participated in training sessions with FC Barcelona’s professional futsal coaches.
