The 3rd Edition of the World Futsal Cup kicked off today in Barcelona, Spain. This International Youth Tournament brings together clubs from across the world to compete in four age categories. This year features teams from England, Spain, Italy, Portugal, USA and France.

The alevin category opened the event and the goals immediately started to fly in which was the sign of things to come in an action packed day. FC Barcelona (Spain), City Futsal (USA) and Rivas 95 (Spain) all recorded big wins. In the other game San Jose (USA) just hung on for victory against Escolla (England) after the English side scored in the last minute to close the gap to 1 goal. It was 2 wins for Spain and 2 wins for the USA in the first games, demonstrating how the game is developing in the latter country.

Next up were games in the other three age categories and FC Barcelona recoded high scoring victories in each of them. FC Barcelona invest heavily in their youth futsal section and they are reaping the rewards from this. Rivas 95 got two more comfortable victories and the Spanish were leading the way with their familiar pass and move style. In the other game Benfica (Portugal) beat Escolla by 2 goals in what was a very tight game but the Portuguese just had the edge.

In the next set of games the two American sides, San Jose and City Futsal, won their games with their previous experience at this tournament evident. Joining them were the Spanish clubs Rivas 95 and FC Barcelona, showing how their playing philosophy is implemented throughout all their age groups and gives results.

In the final set of games Escolla recorded their first victory but also lost to City Futsal in another age group. Others that achieved their first win were Futsal Longwy (France), AE Barbar (Spain) and Aspil Navarra (Spain). Only Lazio (Italy) and Sant Cugat (Spain) weren’t able to celebrate victory on the first day but they will have a chance to rectify this tomorrow when there is another round of fixtures. The finals will be played on 3rd day.
