By Doug Reed @DougReedFutsalSpain will play Greece on Monday 11th November in Murcia in a tribute match for legendary defender
Kike Boned. It will be his 180th and final appearance for the national team.
Kike's debut for 'La Roja' was in 1998 against the Portuguese National University team. More than 15 years later he has earned 179 caps and numerous titles including Spain's first World Cup victory in 2000. This victory gave a huge impetus to the development of Spanish futsal and kick started an era of success.
Further titles included the successful defence of the World Cup four years later in China Taipei and 5 European Championship titles. However his international career will not only be defined by the many titles he claimed; He has been a shining example of leadership, intelligence and perseverance.
Though he will no longer be present in the national squad in the future, his impact will certainly still be felt. He has been a crucial part of Spain's success over the last decade that has resulted in Spain becoming what it is today, a dominant force in international futsal alongside fierce rivals Brazil.
In the final part of his international career he has guided the team through a transitional period with the introduction of a new generation. The time has now arrived for him to pass the baton on and depart but he has written his name in the history of Spanish futsal and the Spanish National Team. Hasta Luego Kike!
