Futsal: National coach to run clinics in city

Thu, 7 Nov 2013

National futsal coach Scott Gilligan will be in Dunedin for the next few days to help people hone their skills in a sport that has exploded in popularity in the South.

Gilligan is an Australian who has been involved in futsal for the past few years.

He firstly coached Australia and then took the game to the Pacific Islands, where he helped improve skills and set up a structure for the sport.

He was appointed the New Zealand coach for the Futsal Whites last year and is also heavily involved in improving the skills of futsal players throughout the country.

Futsal South development manager Mike Clark said it was great for the sport to have someone of the calibre of Gilligan in the city.

The clinics, for which there is be a charge, will be for players and coaches.

Clark said futsal had grown hugely since it started in Dunedin four years ago.

There are 690 teams playing this season in Dunedin and 4500 school children, aged from 5 to 18, playing the game.

Clark said the game was popular because it was fast and skillful, anybody could play it, it was good for fitness and it was played indoors, so was sheltered from the weather.

The workshops start on Saturday and go through to Tuesday.
