ASB Futsal National League: Cream rises on Day Two

Led by a host of Futsal Whites, the cream of New Zealand's futsal talent rose to the top on the second day of series one of the ASB Futsal National League in Auckland on Saturday.

AFF/AUCKLAND - New Zealand’s marquee futsal talent shone through on the second day of Series 1 of the ASB National Futsal League at ASB Stadium in Kohimarama on Saturday.

After Friday’s opening day had seen the bottom side in the 2012-2013 league, Central Manawatu, sit atop the standings, the Futsal White cream rose to the top on second day of competition.

Champions in 2011-2012, AFF-East City took two wins from their two matches, maintaining their unbeaten record and ending the day top of the table as Futsal Whites Marvin Eakins and Dylan Manickum led the way for the hosts.

Facing a 3-1 halftime deficit against Central Hawke’s Bay, Auckland turned things around in the second spell, scoring six times with Manickum accounting for two of the goal-haul while Michael Freeman also chimed in with two strikes of his own.

Auckland’s second match of the day brought together the last two winners of the competition as defending champions Northern Futsal looked to grab their second win of the day.

And they made a good start, Jan Fischer gave his side the lead midway through the first half only for the Auckland side to equalise right on the halftime hooter as Manickum glanced in Eakins’ clipped delivery from deep in his own half.

The hosts were behind the champions again in the second spell when Fischer scored again, with a little help from a Matt Lieshout deflection, but again Auckland responded; Eakins scoring from the spot after Freeman was fouled by Northern ‘keeper Arman Dashtabi.

The game was in the balance until the final four minutes when Eakins scored again from a dead ball, after Northern had committed their fifth foul, and Manickum made the game safe with his fourth goal of the day 90 seconds from time.

Earlier, Northern recorded a 6-3 win over Capital as Futsal Whites Bakr Al-Saudi and Ouadhah Ragued scored five their side’s six goals while Capital’s skipper Miroslav Malivuk, also a New Zealand representative, was among the scorers for his side.

Elsewhere, semi-finalists in 2012-2013, Futsal South’s two wins on the second day were fuelled by the talent of Carlos Herrman as the 2012-2013 competition Golden Boot scored four of his side’s 12 goals in a 7-3 win over Central Manawatu and a later 5-2 victory over Mainland.

If Herrman wasn’t applying the finishing touch to Futsal South’s work he was instrumental in the build-up to a number of goals, and with Manawatu threatening a comeback in their first match, he re-entered the game to put the result to bed.

The southernmost federation ended their long Saturday with a 3-3 draw with Capital in the day’s final match, preserving their unbeaten status after four outings, good enough for second on the ladder, two points behind Auckland. Malivuk underlined his class by scoring all three of the Capital goals.

Before their defeat by Futsal South, Mainland were sparked by their Futsal White duo of Daniel Burns and Jakub Sinkora in their 6-4 win in the first game of the day over Waikato Bay of Plenty as the duo provided the quality and the goals – Burns struck a hat-trick and Sinkora a double - to eventually get Mainland across the line.

The young Waikato Bay of Plenty side did show flashes of things to come in future years with some nice moments in possession as Kyle Wisnewski scored twice.

After ending the first day top of the table with a win and draw, Central Manawatu were unable to maintain that good form, falling 7-3 to Futsal South and losing 7-5 to fellow Central side Hawke’s Bay.

If the Manawatu team had shown a sharper touch in front of goal, it could have been different with a host of chances passed up in the loss to their own federation rivals; including two missed spot kicks.

The final day of Series 1 of the ASB National Futsal League is on Sunday with the action starting at 9am when Waikato Bay of Plenty meet Northern Futsal.
