Gulf Daily NewsMuharraq post first futsal winBAHRAIN's Muharraq Club scored a resounding 4-1 victory last night over City'us Tirgu-Mures from Romania in the Mini World Futsal Club Tournament, currently being held in Kuwait City, reports PATRICK SALOMON.
Jassim Saleh Hassan, Ali Saleh Frih, Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrasool and Mahmood Abdulrahman were all on target for the Bahrainis, who claimed their maiden victory of the tournament.
Muharraq enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the half and never looked back. Covaci Bogdan scored the lone goal for Tirgu-Mures in the second half.
Muharraq opened their account with a Hassan strike in the very first minute. Their quick start gave them a welcome boost, and they were able to double their lead 15 minutes on through Frih.
Frih's goal gave the Bahrainis the comfortable advantage at the interval.
In the second half, the Bogdan gave the Romanians some life with his goal in the 30th minute. But Abdurlasool restored order for the Bahrainis just four minutes later while also regaining the two-goal cushion.
AdvantageTirgu-Mures were then reduced to just four men after Stoica Dumitru Mimi was sent off, and Muharraq took advantage by scoring their fifth and final goal supplied by Bahrain national team star Abdulrahman, who is known more popularly as "Ringo".
The win was a welcome result for Muharraq, who bounced back from a narrow 1-2 defeat in their opening group 'B' game against Deportivo Pinocho of Argentina.
Pinocho claimed their second successive win of the tournament in yesterday's other divisional fixture. They beat FC Erdre of France 3-2 and now top the division with an unscathed record.
Muharraq are being guided in the tournament by Bahrain's national futsal team head coach Gustavo Zloccowick from Brazil.
They have one more group game to play. They take on Erdre on Friday in the hopes of booking a berth in the quarter-finals.
A total of 16 teams from around the world are competing in the first stage of the competition. The field has been divided into four groups.
At the end of a single round-robin, the top two teams from each group advance to the round of eight. The opening round is scheduled to conclude on July 21, after which the knockout matches will be played.
