Josh CallinanJuly 10, 2013While the country’s top footballers eye off the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this Tenambit 12-year-old has his sights set on Europe.
Joey O’Connor will head to the Spanish city of Barcelona in November for a 19-day tour with the Australian under-13 futsal squad.
He was selected after representing Northern NSW at the national junior championships in Sydney earlier this year and he had only recently tried his hand at the sport.
O’Connor plays outdoor football for the Newcastle under 13s representative side and ventured indoors to give futsal a crack with a few mates.
“I really like it now,” he said.
“It has really helped my skill level as well.”
The year 7 student at All Saints College, St Peter’s Campus, Maitland said
Cristiano Ronaldo was his favourite football player.
O’Connor has also been busy on the athletics track, scoring state titles in record time for both 800 and 1500 metre races for the 12 years boys’ division, which followed a visit to Adelaide last year for nationals in the same events.
The talented sportsman is seeking sponsorship to help fund his overseas trip.
