New futsal complex to open in NE Portland

July 3, 2013

PORTLAND – A new sports complex in Portland will be dedicated to the game of futsal.

The game started in Brazil and is based on a street version of traditional soccer. Futsal moves faster than regular soccer, with higher scores.

Futsal has a lot of fans in Portland. There is already a futsal court in Southeast Portland and now there will be one in Northeast Portland.
Families and neighbors who play and love the game formed Rose City Futsal about six months ago. The group is now investing about $2 million to convert a 33,000-square-foot former Standard TV and Appliance warehouse into a three-court futsol complex.

The Northeast Oregon Street complex will include Clive's Public House restaurant, in honor of University of Portland soccer icon Clive Charles, and a Far Post soccer supply store.
The general manger of the project said Rose City Futsal is a community effort.

“The group of investors we put together are either soccer families or local families with kids,” said Eric Dunlap. "We all thought we needed to add something to the community here in northeast.”
Two of the courts will be turf. The other will be a harder surface made of rubber.

League signup begins on July 15 and the new facility is scheduled to open in September.
