Futsal team heading for Europe

The University futsal team’s incredible season is set to continue, after they were invited to play at the European Universities Futsal Championship.

York have qualified to be the UK’s representative at the competition after a remarkable year which saw them reach the semi finals of the BUCS National Championships, eventually beaten by Brighton in an agonisingly close fixture last month.

After Brighton and Loughborough, the other BUCS finalists, declined the invitation to play in Europe, York were invited to compete.

The tournament, organised by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), is due to take place in Malaga, Spain, running from July 21-28.

EUSA events are “tournament winners’ tournaments” for champions in BUCS Competitions to compete against the best universities in Europe.

Charlotte Winter, York Sport President, told Nouse, “It’s fantastic news that the futsal team are playing in Europe, it’s the perfect reward to their brilliant season.”

Jonny Sim, Club Secretary and goalkeeper, added, “Obviously we’re all overjoyed. It’s the perfect way to finish our season and for many of us, our sporting careers at university. Undoubtedly the quality of opposition is going to be a whole new level, and its also a big ask to raise the necessary funds in such a short space of time. But we’ve got so much belief and team spirit that we’ll relish these challenges. We can’t wait!”
