Eagles overpower Trojanmen in Futsal final

Trojanmen gave it their best shot, but it wasn’t enough.

It’s always tough to unseat the Eagles as the champions of the Cowichan Futsal Indoor Soccer League’s men’s division and the Trojanmen suffered the same fate as many other teams before them.

The Eagles defeated the Trojanmen 8-4 in the playoff final to retain the title they’ve dominated throughout the league’s history.

Dwayne George and George Thomas each had three goals for the Eagles while Craig George added a pair.

Jason George (2), Justin Horne and Austin Seymour replied for the Trojanmen.

The game for third place was an all-Penelakut battle, with the island’s Soccer Club team edging United 6-5.

Patrick Brown scored all five goals for United in the losing cause.

The single-elimination playoffs began with the Chiefs defeating Eagles No. 2 6-2. Penelakut Soccer Club doubled the Gunners 8-4, Penelakut United also doubled Shell Beach 6-3, Trojanmen destroyed Eagles No. 3 17-4 and Eagles walloped the Chiefs 23-3.

The Eagles went on to rout Penelakut Soccer Club 18-3 and Trojanmen outdueled Penelakut United 9-6 in the semifinals.

Eagles went 8-0 during the regular season with 84 goals scored and 15 against followed by Trojanmen at 7-1, also with 84 goals scored and 22 against.

Penelakut United finished third at 6-2 followed by Penelakut Soccer Club at 5-3, Eagles No. 2 and Shell Beach both at 3-5, Gunners and Eagles both at 2-6 and Chiefs at 0-8.

The championship game of the ladies’ division playoffs went to overtime, with Cowichan eking out a 3-2 win over Penelakut.

Amber Tommy, Seleana Jack and Jennifer Jack scored for Cowichan. Brittany Brown and Shelby Cross had goals for Penelakut.

Third place went to the Youngbucks.

Youngbucks fell 10-0 to Penelakut and Cowichan romped past the Ravens 12-2 in the semifinals. The Ravens made the second round after edging Shell Beach 7-6.

Cowichan also won the five-team league with a 5-0-1 mark.
