Mainland sides strike futsal form

13/03/2013

Marian College had the perfect preparation to the defence of their national futsal title at the weekend.

The defending champions beat Linwood College 3-1 to win the girls' grade of the Mainland Futsal Championships at Pioneer Stadium and head to next week's nationals in Wellington in fine form.

The St Andrew's College boys team will also head to the nationals as the Mainland champions.

After St Andrew's beat Linwood 3-1 in pool play, the sides met again in a thrilling final, with STAC victorious 1-0.

On the back of two impressive runner-up performances, Linwood, too, will head to nationals.

Lincoln College outplayed Burnside in the year 9-10 boys final, winning 4-1.

In keeping with the rest of the world, futsal is taking off locally, with 22 teams playing in the championship at the weekend, well up from the 14 which played last year.
