Jack TaylorThe University of Sheffield picked up another vital Varsity point with a thrilling 12-6 victory over Hallam in the futsal at the EIS to bring “Manic Monday’ to a conclusion.
Uni of came out of the blocks quickly and never looked back in an entertaining encounter. With only 2 minutes gone Uni of took to the lead when star man Richard Ward toe poked the opener into the bottom right corner, before being booked for an amusing shorts down celebration.
Ward quickly made amends for the card when he scored a second as he wriggled away from 2 defenders to power home. Hallam rarely troubled in the opening 10 minutes as they tried to play a long ball game in stark contrast to the slick build up from Uni of.
Uni of quickly doubled their lead, firstly a quick break from Thomas Msadala put Toluwa Sotonye in the clear as he calmly chipped the keeper and moments later Fakhural Roson finished on the stretch to make it 4-0.
Hallam finally pulled one back with only a couple of minutes of the first half remaining Robi De with the goal.
The second half started much like the first. Sotonye was denied twice in quick succession by the goalkeeper’s legs but he was duly rewarded for his perseverance after good interplay with Fakhural saw him round the keeper before slotting the ball home. Uni then made it 6-1 as Msadala finished to the bottom left.
However a lapse of concentration in 5 second half minutes saw Uni of looking nervy as first Glenn Drawbridge before Jack Langford headed home then Robi De began to claw back the deficit for Hallam.
With the scored at 6-4 Uni of had a second wind, Sotonye once again rounded the keeper to finish off his hat trick and this was quickly followed by Ward’s hat trick from a powerful free kick to make it 8-4. Ward then turned provider with a through ball for Fakhural to finish. Wards incredible night continued as he put Uni of into double figures.
Hallam did manage to get another back after a fine save from Dhruv Gandhi fell to Amanj. But tempers began to boil over as Hallam’s Amanj saw the red card. W
ard then grabbed his fifth to make it 11-5 before Hallam’s goalkeeper took the scored to 11-6 with a low drive. There was still time for more cheers for the large crowd as Ryan Wilson finished off the scoring to make it 12-6 and a happy night for Uni.
