BC Futsal Championship: Girls round-robin competitive in first day

Surrey United SC sit atop U14, while U16 division up for grabs after day one of BC Futsal Championship

Going into day-two of the BC Futsal Championship, the story on the girls’ side is the U14 Surrey United SC, who are now one win away from the finals, while the U16 divisions are very much still up for grabs.

The United SC consists of girls born in 1998, one year older than their three competing teams. It was not so much the age, as the experience that paid dividends for the team as they went on to win both their opening games.

They beat Royal City NW Barcelona 3-2 in their opening game and finished the day stomping Fusion FC 5-1.

In other BC Futsal Championship play, Surrey United plays Coastal FC Sunday at 10 a.m.

Coastal FC coach Steven Duffy is happy with what he has seen from his team so far and looks forward to the challenge of Surrey United SC.

“As the tournament goes on, we are getting better, which is nice to see,” he said. “It’s a pre-season thing. So I’m looking forward to shake the cobwebs off after Christmas.”

Duffy’s team won their first game 2-1 against Fusion FC and fell short their second game 3-1 against Royal City NW Barcelona 3-1.

“First game we didn’t play so good, even though we got the win,” said Duffy. “Second game, we played better but didn’t quite get the result. As the tournament goes on, we are getting better which is nice to see.”

In the U16 division, the four games that took place were close checking games leaving no clear cut tournament favorite.

In the morning Fusion FC beat Coquitlam Metro-Ford Benfica 6-1 and Surrey United SC beat Coastal FC 2-1.

In the afternoon, Fusion FC and Coastal FC battled to 1-1 tie while Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC Benfica came back from their 6-1 loss to grind out a 6-5 victory over Surrey United SC.

At 10 a.m. tomorrow Coquitlam Metro-Ford will play their final game against Coastal FC while Surrey United SC will play Fusion FC at noon.

Sunday’s round robin games have huge finals implications. The BC Futsal Championship tournament finals will be played at 4 p.m.
