J. Daniel RollinsBECKLEY — Southern WV Futsal is a new league, under the umbrella of the King’s Warriors and the Christian ministry Nehemiah Group.
Futsal is the only form of indoor soccer approved by FIFA, the governing body for competitive soccer.
“Futsal is a 5 on 5 4 vs 4 with a goalkeeper form of soccer,” Jonathan Windle, the league director said in a phone interview. “There are boundaries, and unlike indoor soccer, there are no plays off the walls, so it’s safer. The major emphasis is on ball control and quick passes. They are also two keys that carry over when you go to the outdoor game.”
The league will start on January 19 and will run for six weekends through February 23. Games will be played on Saturdays at Country Side Baptist Church on Route 12 in Forrest Hill, just past the 4H camp.
There will be divisions from kindergarten through high school as well as adult and a college men’s division. If there are women’s college and adult players interested in playing, they will play in the girls high school division. First and second grade teams will be co-ed, while the remaining divisions will be gender specific.
The cost to join is $35 and teams will need to provide their own uniform. Teams will consist of a minimum of 7 players and a maximum of 10. Registration will begin on Jan 5 at 11 a.m. at the church and will continue on Jan 11.
“We’ve been seeing a lot of growth in soccer in the community,” Windle said. “It’s a lot like field of dreams. If you build it, they will come.”
For more information, Windle encouraged people to visit www.wvkingswarriors.org.
