Thailand to host new futsal event

Thailand will host a new futsal tournament, the Continental Cup, featuring champions from six continents next November.

The event due to be held between November 1 and 10 at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium and Nimibutr Stadium was initiated by Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi, who wanted to build on the country's successful hosting of the Fifa Futsal World Cup last month.

The competition will include six continental champions from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania, World Cup winners Brazil and hosts Thailand. The eight participating teams will be spilt into two groups of four each, with the top two sides from each section qualifying for the semi-finals.

"We will stage the Asean Futsal Championship in October at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium and Nimibutr Stadium before the Continental Cup. It'll be a dress rehearsal for our team before the big event, which we intend to stage every year," said Worawi.
