Hacer Acontecer: Futsal Documentary in Production

By Doug Reed

Futsal continues to grow. The recent World Cup was the largest ever and the future looks bright for this fantastic sport. As we try to imagine what the future may look like we must not forget the history that led us up to this point. Fortunately there is a Spanish documentary being made about the history of futsal, called Hacer Acontecer (Make it Happen), to help us do this.

The team behind it wanted to give a voice to a sport that has given so much to so many people and that still has much more to offer in the future. Their view is that futsal deserves much more recognition than it currently receives, due to its historic past as well as its current form. Many people who are engaged in this sport share the same opinion but these guys decided to ‘Make it Happen’ and set out to achieve their objective through the form of a documentary.

Initially the idea was to make a documentary about one of the greatest players of this generation, Kike Boned of Spain and El Pozo Murcia. As a young player he was part of the squad that made Spanish sporting history in Guatemala in 2000 by winning the World Cup and has been present at every subsequent edition including last month’s in Thailand, after which he retired from international duty. During the production they interviewed a who’s who of Spanish futsal from the last 20 years and it became obvious that there was such a rich and powerful history that had to be included. The documentary has since been expanded to a history of Spanish futsal with Kike as narrator, an ideal candidate since he has experienced this marvellous period first hand.

The documentary is now in its final stages of production after huge effort and sacrifice from the team behind it. There will be interviews with too many legends to name them all but they include Javi Rodriguez, Javier Lozano, Paulo Roberto and Luis Amado. In addition the documentary includes inspiring and exclusive video and photographs. They recently released an inspirational and moving teaser which is available at the bottom of this article. From viewing this short clip it becomes clear that this documentary will achieve its objective and much more and is essential viewing for those with involvement in futsal’s past, present and future.

Though nearing completion the documentary still requires a lot more assistance until we can enjoy the finished product. This could be in terms of sponsorship, collaborations or simply providing materials and help is needed from all over the world. You can contact the team and keep up to date with the latest news and information on the documentary at (much of the info is available in English and Spanish and the final documentary will have English subtitles).
