Daily MercuryFutsal trio learns from UK tour16th Nov 2012THREE Mackay futsal players had their eyes opened to the speed and skill of the indoors game when they played with an Australian team in England.
Kaitlin McLennan and Felicity Morris, both 14, and Johannah Biddle, 16, visited London, Chester and Middlesborough during the three-week tour.
"Most days we played, and mostly at night," Morris said.
"It's very popular in England, but I think outdoors soccer still would be the most popular sport there.
"In Brazil futsal is big because you have to play it until you are 16, then you can go and play outdoors soccer.
"That's why all the Brazilian players are so skilful and have such good touch."
Morris, together with Chloe Burston and Nellie Goldston, has been invited to tour Brazil next year with an Australian futsal team, but she is unsure if she can go. "Unless I can get a sponsor I may not go, because it will cost $6400," she said.
A highlight for the girls was a coaching session at Manchester City, and attending two games when Manchester United and Liverpool played.
"The coaching at Manchester City was terrific," Morris said.
"We had some training at other clubs but it stood out, we showed a lot of improvement in our next game.
"They have a lot of academies over there so the competition is really intense."
Morris said moves were afoot to have futsal included as an Olympic sport.
It's been a busy few months for Morris, who attended the national futsal titles in Townsville four days before leaving for the UK. On her return she played in the state schoolgirls cricket championships in Brisbane.
