Sports Byte SunderlandCowan hopes for a big season for the University of Sunderland Futsal teamWith the University Futsal season not starting until November, captain Richard Cowan is hoping the side can start to mold together in the coming weeks in order to hit the ground running.
The team’s first match will take place on November 25th, when they face local rivals Newcastle in a BUCS Futsal Trophy match. In the league however, the side doesn’t play until Feburary 2013.
Despite this Cowan is hoping to arrange a number of friendlies and enter his side into as many tournaments as possible to keep the players fresh and fit in time for the season opener. He does insist however, that without the necessary funding it will be difficult to move forward.
The side took part in three friendly games last week including matches against Northumbria’s 1sts and 2nds, as well as rivals Teesside 1sts.
The results on the whole were disappointing, as the team tasted defeat against both Northumbria sides. The Sunderland Captain was very critical of his team’s preparation and performance after the games.
“The Northumbria sides were very strong, but it didn’t help that we were so dis-organised and despite having plenty of talent in the team, our discipline up-front and in defence was very poor.
“This is something we can try to improve on in training and iron out before the season starts.”
There was one positive from the day however, as the side did pick up a win against rivals Teesside. On the whole Cowan is hopeful the experiences from last year and new players coming in this year will see the team push forward and try to gain promotion.
Training takes place every Tuesday 4-6pm at City Space and the team urges anyone interested to get involved.
