Speaking at the closing ceremony, Bau District education officer Yunus Apok commented that even though it was just an U-12 tournament, there was much fun and flair with a lot of ball control and dribbling skills on display throughout the competition.
“The collaboration of the Sarawak Education Department and MSNS, through the junior development programme coupled with the untiring work of the coaches and teachers from all the schools involved are starting to produce results,” he added.
He lamented that although participation in sports is compulsory for students, some parents are still reluctant to ask their children to take up sports due to their concern of safety issue.
“Futsal is like football and has strict rules of engagement. There is danger in any type of contact sport, but with proper supervision and guidance, the danger is controlled and minimised,” Yunus said. He stressed that sports has been proven as an effective method of building self-esteem, self-discipline, and goal oriented behaviour.
“Sports are not the answer to all of our children’s problems but it gives them a solid foundation to cope with the pressures each endures throughout childhood, setting the patterns and behaviours for a successful transition to adulthood,” Yunus explained.
