The AFC.comAsian nations await Friday's drawWednesday, 22 August 2012Bangkok: Five Asian nations will know their opponents when the draw of the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2012 Thailand will be conducted on Friday in Bangkok.
Reigning Asian champions Japan, Iran, Australia, Kuwait and the hosts Thailand are in contention for the futsal’s global event starting from November 1 in four different stadiums across Thailand.
With four quotas in the offing from Asian Futsal Championship held in Dubai in May, champions Japan, and semi-finalists Iran and Australia booked their place in the World Cup. With runner-up Thailand being the hosts of the tournament, Asia got an additional quota and Kuwait made full use of it by finishing as the fifth-ranked country in the Asian Championship.
A total of 24 countries across the globe will feature in the championship. There will be six groups of four teams with top two teams from each group alongside with two best third-placed teams qualifying for the quarter-finals. The final will be on November 18.
The participating countries following their respective continental qualifications are:
Asia: Japan, Thailand, Iran, Australia, Kuwait
Europe: Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia, Italy
North and Central America: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Mexico
South America: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Columbia
Africa: Egypt, Libya, Morocco
