Glenwood High's futsal star

GLENWOOD High student Renee Blakemore is the Advocate's latest Junior Sports Star nominee, after representing NSW at the indoor soccer or futsal nationals earlier this year.

The year 9 student, who lives at Glenwood, was awarded a $500 grant this month from the Australian Sports Commission for her efforts. "I love all sports, but soccer is my main one and I play both outdoor and indoor," Renee said.

She said there were only five players on a futsal team and the fast-paced games allowed her to develop her skills and transfer them to outdoor soccer, where she plays in the U16 Blacktown Spartans team.

At the futsal nationals she was joined by fellow Glenwood High student Jessica Boylett in making the final, before falling to Victoria.

At the U14 level they do not pick a national team, meaning the pair made it through to the highest level possible.

Greenway federal Labor MP Michelle Rowland, who presented Renee with her $500 grant at a morning tea earlier this month, said the grants provided important financial assistance to gifted young athletes.

"These grants help by reducing barriers such as distance and finances." The awards are made possible by sponsor Rebel Sport.
