Central Western DailyWestern side to put boot inby
Nick McGrath09 Jan, 2012THE Football NSW Western under 14s team put the finishing touches on their preparation for the National Futsal Championships with a spirited training session at Anzac Park.
The team will head for the Southern Cross Indoor Stadium, Canberra, today to compete in the nationals against two sides from the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia over the course of the five-day tournament.
Four Orange boys, Blair Esposito, Jackson Fuda, Brock Mate and Reece Robinson, have made the squad coached by Sam Fuda.
Western manager Matt Savaro said the boys were looking forward to the challenge.
“It’ll be interesting. Some of the sides we’re coming up against have been playing together for five or six years,” Savaro said.
“In Sydney, futsal is a really big thing, and they’re sending their club sides, they’ve had two or three years together. We’ve had under three months. This is our third training session. As long as the kids have fun, that’s the main thing.”
However, Savaro said the under 14s side would learn plenty from the experience.
“(We just want to) learn more about the game and just to better themselves in the sport. If we come away with a win, that’s a bonus,” he said.
“If we don’t and the kids learn something, that’s even better.”
There are a number of subtleties that differentiate regular football from futsal.
The big one is the speed.
The sport of futsal is played at lightning quick pace.
“It’ll be a good eye opener for these kids,” he said.
There will be under 12s, 13s, 14s and 16s boys National Futsal Championships in Canberra this week while the girls will contest the 14s and 16s girls championships.
Football NSW Western will send a combined under 14s and 15s side to the championships.
