Marilyn TenDecember 14, 2011, WednesdayKUCHING: The Kuching North City Council (DBKU) men’s and women’s futsal squads created history when they were chosen to represent Sarawak for the first time at the Felda/FAM National Futsal League 2011/2012 which will be held in Shah Alam on Dec 17 and 18.
“Although this is the first time Sarawak will be represented at national level futsal league, we are confident that we will be able to take on the challenge to uphold the image and name of DBKU as well as to make the state proud,” said team manager Zaidi Pathi at the handing over ceremony of the squads’ jerseys here yesterday.
The men’s squad has been drawn against Selangor MPSJ FC, Selangor PKNS, Sabah, Pulau Pinang, ATM and Kedah in Group A whereas the women’s squad will face PDRM, Selangor MPSJ FC, Terengganu Permaisuri, Sabah UMS, KL Putraria, UiTM FC and ATM in Group B.
“We will definitely try our best to challenge the more established teams from West Malaysia,” he said and pointed out that prior to this, the teams participated in a qualifying league on Nov 17 comprising 12 teams where they emerged among the top four teams in the league.
“The men and women’s squads have also been constantly training to ensure that they are well prepared to face their opponents in the tournament,” Zaidi added.
Also present at the ceremony were Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) deputy chairman Razali Dolhan and DBKU deputy director Jafri Lias who congratulated both teams on their accomplishment.
