Call to boot them out in Kew

UNAUTHORISED night-time sports have been taking place at a Kew school despite Boroondara Council knowing about it for months.

Nearby residents Tony and Vicki Morrissey said groups had been using Kew High School grounds for night-time sports since earlier this year despite the school or the company, Futsal Central, not having a permit.

Mrs Morrissey said they complained to the council in September and were told in October an application had been lodged by the school.

“The fact remains they are playing without a permit,” she said.

“There are issues with parking and the noise and light pollution. I want the permit to be rejected, there’s been no consultation with the neighbourhood.”

Mr Morrissey agreed, saying he didn’t like that the unauthorised activities, mainly soccer, had been allowed to continue.

“I’m concerned it’s going to be ongoing, whether they have a permit or not,” he said.

“The longer it goes on the harder it’s going to be for us to stop it.”

After Progress Leader’s inquiries, Boroondara Council city development director Phillip Storer said the council had “advised” Futsal Central to stop until a permit was obtained but he added that the council had no power to enforce it.

“VCAT and the Magistrates Court generally adjourn hearing such matters pending the outcome of the application for approval,” Mr Storer said.

Kew High School principal Clare Entwisle said the council “haven’t asked for it to stop”.

She said she had asked the company to stop playing until the application had been processed.

Futsal Central failed to return Progress Leader’s calls.
