FUTSAL: UiTM the team to beat

by T.N. Alagesh

HIGHER education institutions competing in the Grand Finals of the Higher Education Minister's Cup futsal tournament in Kuantan this week, have only one dream -- to end Universiti Teknologi Mara's (UiTM) 48-match winning streak.

UiTM have yet to drop a single point since last year's edition and are now the strong favourites to defend the title, especially after firing 31 goals against their opponents in the preliminary rounds yesterday.

Boosted by the return of goal poacher Mohd Ali Mahat, who missed the earlier rounds due to his commitment with the national squad which finished fourth in the Sea Games last month, UiTM seem unstoppable in their quest to walk away with the trophy this year.

Team manager Muhamad Izuan Othman said he was aware that many teams were trying hard to beat or at least walk away with a draw against UiTM.

He said it would be an uphill task to steal points from UiTM as the current batch of players were experienced.

"Most of our players have vast experience playing with their respective state teams in the national futsal league and are exposed to various tournaments.

"This year, we have 10 players from last year's winning team and in fact, we have some young promising players to fill the shoes of those who will graduate this year," he said in Kuantan yesterday.
