Ireland Deaf Futsal team in World quarters

Monday, 21 November 2011

The Ireland Deaf Futsal team has qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Deaf Futsal Championship.

Ireland will meet Turkey on Tuesday in the quarter-final clash after finishing second in their qualifying group behind Russia.

The Russians beat Ireland 6-8 in the opening game of the campaign in Orebro, Sweden.

The sides went in level at 3-3 at half-time but although Ireland came back from 8-4 to 8-6 with five minutes left, they could not close the gap any further. Joseph Watson (3), Sean Young (2) and Jason Maguire were the scorers.

That loss meant Ireland had to beat Sweden in their next game and they duly did so, securing a 3-6 victory over the host nation.

Good finishing by Joseph Watson and Eamon Byrne, including a long range Byrne goal, helped Ireland go 4-1 ahead.

Sweden kept pressing but further scores from Sean Young and Justin Smith gave Ireland a cushion and they absorbed two late Swedish goals.

Ireland went on to thrash Japan 14-3 in the final group match with a host of scorers finding the net. Smith, Darren Dunne, Young and Byrne all scored twice.

Tuesday's game against Turkey will be covered live on the Irish Deaf Sports Facebook page www.facebook.com/irishdeafsports.
