Tuesday, November 08, 2011

Kota Kinabalu: About 44,000 people representing 4,440 teams nationwide took part in the Parliament 1Youth 1Malaysia Futsal Championship last year.

Implemented by the Youth and Sports Department, the annual programme is aimed at inculcating interest among the grassroots as well as to attract youths to take part in sports.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk VK Liew said last year, the Sports Development Section successfully carried out 222 futsal programmes at Parliament level.

The championship, he said, has several objectives namely:

- To enhance community empowerment
- To enhance expertise/volunteerism among locals
- To train the local community in implementing sports at community level
- To enhance enjoyment and effectiveness in the programme implementation
- To popularise sports throughout the country

He said the championship's finals this year would be held in Putrajaya to which the champions in each parliamentary constituency would send their representatives.

He said the Government built futsal courts throughout the country so that all levels of the people in their respective areas would use them.
