MIRI: More futsal courts are going to be built in Sarawak as part of government effort to increase youth participation in sporting activities.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin said that the sport was getting popular among the youth nowadays, particularly those at the residential area.

“It is happy to note that we are going to have more futsal courts, hopefully with the viability of such facility will help to develop the sport ,” he told The Borneo Post after officiating Food Preparation Workshop at Dynasty Hotell last Sunday.

Lee who is also Senadin Assemblyman said this to support the media statement made by deputy minister of Youth and Sports Senator Gan Ping Sieu that the ministry would see an increase in its allocation to RM29 million next year for its youth development and sport programme.

He added that he would be looking forward that such allocation would help to improve the existing facilities for sports and recreational purposes, thus helping to boost the state’s sports industry.

In addition to that, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabled the 2012 Budget had announced that the government would allocate RM15 million to build an additional 150 futsal courts in view of the popularity of the sport among youths.

Najib said RM50 million would be allocated to build football fields with artificial turf at 30 selected locations nationwide.

On artificial turf, Lee said further Sarawak at the moment yet to have football fields with artificial turf.

“At the moment, we only have artificial turf for hockey field, thus we should have such artificial turf for football field. It is because most of the football tournaments are being held at football field with artificial turf,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, artificial turf is a surface manufactured from synthetic fibers made to look like natural grass.

It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass.

The main reason for the preferred artificial turf is that it is less maintenance as it resists heavy use as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming.
