FA Futsal Fives Leagues proving a winning formula for new teams

Liverpool County FA in partnership with The FA have recently launched their FA Futsal Fives league programme with great success with 24 Futsal teams (16 male and 8 female) now competing in three weekly leagues that are being hosted across the city.

This exciting format of five-a-side is still relatively new to England and the aim of The FA Futsal Fives is provide opportunities for new participants and small-sided football teams to experience Futsal at a recreational level by competing in high quality local leagues across the country.

Liverpool FA currently delivers a male and female league at Wavertree Lifestyles Tennis Centre and a further male league at Croxteth Sports and Wellbeing Centre. All leagues contain a mixture of teams with some having Futsal experience and some completely new to Futsal or football in general.

FA Futsal Fives Liverpool League Co-ordinator Tony Smith commented: “The standard of play has been really encouraging and everyone seems to be really enjoying this format of the game and the way the league is run. A lot of the new teams who normally play 11v11 football or traditional five-a-side have picked the game up really quickly.

“Liverpool County FA are delighted to be part of The FA Futsal Fives programme, we believe it is only a matter of time before Futsal really takes off in this country as the technical, tactical, physical and social aspects of the game benefits players of all ages and abilities. The Futsal revolution has begun and we are excited to be part of it."

Player/Manager of Chasing Shadows, one of the new teams taking part, was enthusiastic in his praise for The FA Futsal Fives League: “I can’t believe how fast it is! All of the players are hooked already. We don’t want to do our normal training anymore as we can use Futsal as our training now!”

The FA are now preparing to launch further FA Futsal Fives in February given the success of the current leagues operating in Liverpool, Northampton, Middlesex and Hertfordshire. Each FA Futsal Fives league has eight teams that play each other twice over the course of a 14 week season. Leagues will typically be played on a midweek evening at the same indoor venue each week, and each team will play one game per week.
