Steve CarleyThe profile of blind football continues to rise following Worcester’s capture of a national league and cup double.
The University of Worcester-based five-a-side futsal team won the Brian Aarons Cup, the sport’s equivalent of the FA Cup, to add to the FA National Blind Futsal League title earlier this year.
Although they have won the league in three of the past four seasons, it is the first time they have secured the double.
Dave Mycock’s team qualified for the cup final with two wins and two draws from the round-robin stage.
They took on the RNC Academy Bulls from Hereford, eventually triumphing 2-1 on penalties following a 0-0 draw.
The seven-man squad comprised captain Keryn Seal, who won more than 50 caps for England and Great Britain, Robin Williams, Will Norman, Owen Bainbridge and Fritz Bisau, as well as sighted goalkeepers Dan James and Patrick Haynes.
Mycock said: “It was nice to get the league and cup double.
“In 2010 we lost 5-2 to Everton in the final and this year we have won.
“Things are on the up and we are moving forwards.”
