Connie PapoutsisCHELTENHAM Girls’ High School soccer players are bending it like Beckham in both indoor and outdoor soccer.
They won the State Futsal Championship on July 25 and were state runners-up in the Errea competition on August 24.
In just their second year of the futsal competition, the under 19s team defeated Pymble Ladies College 5-2 in the finals, while the under 19s soccer team drew 1-1 against Albury High School and after 10 minutes of extra time, lost 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out.
The two teams share coach Felip Necic, who is also a visual arts teacher at the school.
“Last year I felt like we missed out and were unlucky. But this year we knew we had a good team. The girls played very good and you should see their ball control, it is impressive.”
Necic said soccer was proving to be popular among the students, expanding from one soccer team to three since he started teaching at the school more than four years ago.
The futsal team is made up of eight players and the soccer team 17. The under 15s team also made it through to the final 16 of the Bill Turner Trophy competition.
