Kellyville High School wins regional championship

by Steven Spierings

KELLYVILLE High School's all-conquering girls futsal team has added to their growing trophy cabinet by winning this month's regional championship.

The girls entered the tournament as defending Dural champions, and were able to hang onto their crown with a tight 2-nil grand final victory over neighbouring Kellyville-based William Clarke College.

Coach Fabio Caprarelli praised the girls' physical discipline and team unity.

"This was our fifth regional championship," Caprarelli said.

"Over the past five years no other school has been able to match our achievements."

Kellyville finished the group phase in second place with 21 points. The team won eight of their nine games and only suffered one 2-nil loss to William Clarke College.

Qualifying for the final as one of the top two teams, Kellyville started poorly but held their composure to beat William Clarke College 2-nil.

Captain Angela Mokhtar said: "it was good to beat their main rival and show the region who is number one".

"We displayed more passion than anyone else," Mokhtar said.

"Our team has a better bond and skills than the others.

"I think we really deserved our title."

The result means Kellyville will have the opportunity to defend their state championship title at Penrith Sports Stadium in August.

Caprarelli said his team would enter the state championships as favourites, but remained cautious about their chances of winning: "There's a lot of good teams," he said. "Our aim is to qualify for the quarter finals and then we'll take one step at a time."
