Montesilvano won the first Futsal title in their debut performance: 2011 UEFA Futsal Cup

by Sam Willis

The final of the 2011 UEFA Futsal Cup was held on the May 1, at the Baluan Sholak Sport Palace Almaty, Kazakhstan. The final was competed amongst the Sporting Clube de Portugal and the ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5 from Italy. The results were unexpected as a debut team made its way to cup without any major hurdles on their way up.

The Italian ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5 team made their debut in the tournament and showed an extra-ordinary performance and won the Futsal Cup. The Italian team proved their dominancy in the final from the start. They scored four goals in the first half of the match. Earlier, the team marked an incredible win against the title holder of the championship in the semi-final, the SL Benfica team from Portugal.

The Italian player, Hernan Garcias, scored the opening goal in the first five minutes of the match. Following him Adriano Foglia scored two goals in the first half of the match. His second goal was precise and low into the bottom-right-corner of the net. Fabricio Calderolli scored the fourth goal in the first half of the match in the last minute before the half time.

The Italian team was four-nil ahead of the Portugal club at the end of the first half of the match time. For the Portugal team it was important to stop the Italian team not only from scoring goals, but they also needed to come out of the damage the Italians did in the first half.

The Sporting team striving to score goals became more frustrated. They missed chances to take the ball near to the goal especially Cristian Borruto and the captain, Forte, lost clear chances to strike against the Italian. In the panic they crashed into giving a penalty, due to Marcelo Silva's foul on Borruto. Leandro Cuzzolino scored the fifth goal from the Italian side on a penalty kick. The Italian team was in no mood to show mercy towards the Portugal.

The Sporting Clube de Portugal, Leitão scored the first goal in the 31 minute of the match. The Sporting goal-keeper Cristiano tried to block the attempts of the Italian team to score goals, but it all went in vain. The best they could achieve were two late goals in the second half of the match. The match was sealed with a goal from the Sporting, once again by the Portuguese player Leitão, who managed to make his way to score goals once with a direct shot and then with a header. An exciting match, ended with a surprise winner.
